Four works of art attributed to the plastic artists Cruzeir Seixas (1920–2020) and Malangatana (1936–2011) were confiscated by the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) on “strong suspicions that they are counterfeit works of art.” was announced on Tuesday.
According to a statement released by the ASAE about the arrest, carried out as a precautionary measure, the estimated value of all confiscated works of art is 17,000 euros, “taking into account relevant sales and auction volumes.”
Investigations have also opened two criminal cases in recent months, against an art gallery and an auction house, the ASAE, which operates through the National Information and Criminal Investigation Unit, said.
The various investigations in question focus on the commercialization of works of art, namely the fight against crimes of copyright usurpation, the use of counterfeit works, fraud and forgery, he adds.
The ASAE “will continue to monitor the art counterfeiting phenomenon by promoting copyright protection and ensuring consumer protection when dealing with this type of art,” the police also said.
