Former PSD leader Durau Barroso returned this Saturday to reject a candidacy for the presidency of the republic and said “winning the European elections” would be critical to the party’s return to governance.
At the end of the “class” at the PSD Summer University, Duran Barroso was questioned by journalists about the possibility of running for the presidency of the republic, but he refused to return to this topic “every day”, referring to statements made in February. in which he ruled out running for Belen, stating that his beliefs were “exactly the same”.
When asked if “never” really meant never in his case, he replied: “Exactly, that’s what I said.”
In February, the former prime minister was questioned about this by journalists after he was awarded the title Honoris Causa by the Catholic University.
“This is the most important position that a Portuguese can take. I’m flattered, but I don’t even have a chance. (…) Even if I had such a desire, I don’t know if anyone would vote for me. I’m not in this competition,” he said at the time.
This Saturday, when asked about some of the names in his political circle who allowed for such a possibility, such as Marques Mendez or Santana Lopez, he only replied that “it is good that all those who feel capable of taking certain positions” , suggest such a possibility, but refused to do so. type “commenter talk”.
According to Durau Barroso, “the PSD’s political priority is to prepare for a government,” arguing that the country needs a different government, and that for this it must win the European elections in January 2024.
“Of course, all elections are important, but from a political point of view, it is important now, in addition to the elections in Madeira, to win the European elections. The immediate political goal is to prepare to become a government, for which it is very important to win in Europe,” he said.
Asked if this result could have implications for Luis Montenegro’s leadership, or if it would be useful to present candidates for European elections quickly, Durau Barroso again refused to participate in party politics. “I’m not ready for party-political interference, except to express my opinion,” he assured.
