Bill Richardson, Former Democratic Governor and U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Dies

Bill Richardson, the former Democratic governor of the U.S. state of New Mexico and U.S. ambassador to the UN, who also worked for many years to free U.S. citizens held by foreign adversaries, died Saturday at the age of 75.

The Richardson Center for Global Engagement, which he founded and chaired, said in a statement Saturday that Bill Richardson died in his sleep at his home in Chatham, Massachusetts.

“He has lived his entire life serving others, including his time as governor and subsequent career helping to free people taken hostage or illegally detained overseas,” said center vice president Mickey Bergman.
