“I did everything so that he did not die alone, but he died abandoned in the hospital.” This is the story of Ana, the 93-year-old daughter of António Fernandes, who died in the hallway of the Beatriz Angelo Hospital in Loures after waiting over five hours to be transferred to the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon.
The daughter regrets that she did not receive an apology from the hospital. “They made a mistake and they should admit it, but they don’t,” reports Ana. Antonio fell at the nursing home where he lived and broke his hip. Camarate firefighters took him to the hospital. What they didn’t know was that the ER was overcrowded and there wasn’t even a stretcher left. The firemen offered to transport them, but the hospital refused.
The elderly man’s daughter also says that she heard the news of her father’s death on television. “The doctor told me that my father had died, and I replied that I already knew that I had seen it on TV. And he told me: “Then why did you come here?”, – said the woman.
The report “Waiting for Death” will be aired this Monday, from 21:30, on the channel CMTV.
