Enough people can go to elections in Madeira after the decision of the Constitutional Court

The Constitutional Court (CC) has dismissed two appeals filed to undermine Chega’s candidacy in Madeira’s regional elections, leaving 13 competing lists initially recognized, the court source said.

According to the President of Comarca Madeira, Filipe Camara, the TC “had not heard of the appeal of Gregorio Teixeira”, a former member of Chega, and “considered the ADN unfounded”.

“Therefore, the 13 candidates running for the elections approved by the Judicial Court of Comarca Madeira remain,” Filipe Camara told the Lusa news agency.

Last Wednesday, the Judicial Court of Comarca Madeira submitted to the TC two appeals contesting the admission of Chega’s candidacy to the regional legislative elections on September 24, submitted by ADN and Gregorio Teixeira.

The appeals, presiding judge Komarchi Madeira said at the time, followed a ruling dismissing complaints filed by the National Democratic Alternative (ADN) and Chega militant Gregorio Teixeira, thus confirming the candidacy.

Both plaintiffs argued that Chega’s candidacy, led by Miguel Castro, was not accepted, given the decision of the Constitutional Court No. 520/2023, which declared the Fifth National Assembly of this party invalid.

At the congress, the leadership was elected, which approved the list of candidates for the elections to the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira.

For the September 24 vote, the Madeiran court approved 13 candidates, corresponding to two coalitions and 11 other parties, whose final lists will be published this Monday, according to the electoral map.

As a result of the distribution of 13 political forces on the ballot, the Portuguese Labor Party (PTP) ranked first, followed by Juntos Pelo Povo (DPP), Block de Esquerda (BE), Socialist Party (PS), Chega (CH), React Include Integrate (RIR), Party of the Earth (MPT), National Democratic Alternative (ADN), Somoz Madeira (PSD/CDS-PP coalition), People-Animals-Nature (PAN), Livre (L), CDU – Coalition Unitary Democratic Party (PCP/PEV) and the Liberal Initiative (IL).

The previous regional elections were held on September 22, 2019.

In this election, in one constituency, a coalition and 16 other parties competed for 47 seats in the Parliament of Madeira: PSD, PS, CDS-PP, JPP, BE, Chega, IL, PAN, PDR, PTP, PNR, Aliança. , Partido da Terra – MPT, PCTP/MRPP, PURP, RIR and CDU (PCP/PEV).

The PSD then lost for the first time the absolute majority in the Madeira Regional Legislative Assembly, which it had held since 1976. She elected 21 deputies and formed a coalition government with the SDS-PP (three deputies).

The PS elected 19 deputies, three from the AKP and one from the PKP.
