German far right wins regional elections for first time since 1945

Germany’s far right wins regional elections in eastern Thuringia for first time since 1945, but loses in Saxony Conservative Christian Democrats (CDU).

According to the Infratest Dimap exit poll, the AfD won between 30.5% and 33.5% of the vote in Thuringia, winning a regional election for the first time, ahead of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which had around 24.5%.

The result thus represents a reversal compared to the 2019 vote, in which the CDU won with 32.1% and the AfD did not exceed 27.5%.

“This is a rejection of the coalition government, and the ruling parties must ask themselves whether they can continue to govern the country,” said AfD co-chair Alice Weidel.
