PCP responds to Montenegro, asks PM to take presidential elections ‘calmly’

The Secretary General of the PCP responded this Friday to Luis Montenegro’s call for calm regarding the discussion of the 2025 state budget, asking the PSD leader to remain calm “regarding the presidential elections”.

“It’s true, I say that the Prime Minister is right. In the same way, I say that he also remains calm about the presidential elections, which are still a long way off,” joked Paulo Raimundo when asked about the appeal for the calm made by the Prime Minister on Thursday about the discussion of the 2025 state budget.

The next presidential elections are expected to take place in January 2026.

Paulo Raimundo spoke to journalists during a visit to AgroSemana – Feira Agrícola do Norte in Póvoa do Varzim.

After several public statements by party leaders about the state budget, the proposal for which will not be presented until October, the prime minister expressed admiration for the “campaigning” and asked the opposition to remain calm, postponing the discussion to meetings that had been agreed for September.

“I am surprised to see such a stir around this issue. We need to remain calm and implement what we have agreed on,” the head of government said while speaking to journalists.

Asked this Friday about the party’s position in this debate, Raimundo stressed that the Communists voted against and said that the PCP “will never be able to follow a document that is just another part” of the program that follows the options of the PSD/SDS-PP government.

“And so it is clear from our side that we are going to do what we have already said, we do not support,” he said.

Regarding the call for calm, Raimundo responded that Montenegro should remain calm regarding the presidential elections, as there is still a lot of time left.

As for the Social Democrats, former PSD leader and commentator Marques Mendes said on Thursday that he is close to deciding whether to run for president of the republic.

Marques Mendes took up this position at the PSD Summer University, which is taking place in Castelo de Vide, Portalegre, three days after the announcement of the global strategic move of Luís Montenegro, the second candidate for the post of PSD leader.

In this document, Luis Montenegro pledges to support the party’s option of holding inclusive presidential elections and states that he will await “the possible appearance of party members.”

Regarding a possible agreement in the negotiations between the government and the PS, the secretary general of the PCP stated that the government “is calmly managing the country with the budget of the previous government.”

“The current budget was approved by the previous Socialist Party government and is one that would have seen more than half of the NHS budget go to a sector that makes sickness a business,” he argued.

Regarding the situation in the health sector, Paulo Raimundo also expressed concern about the closure of 13 emergency obstetric facilities on Saturday.

“It’s hard for me to say this, but in my region, on the southern bank of the Tagus, we will have total coverage, zero emergencies, to reach thousands of people,” he lamented.
