The bad weather that hit the Trás os Montes region, especially the Vila Real region, with heavy rain and hail, left a trail of destruction.
The most serious situations occurred in the municipality of Alijo. This Friday, a wall at the Sanfins do Douro cemetery collapsed under the pressure of water and damaged tombs and graves.
The population is outraged, because this is not the first time bad weather has caused damage here. Another wall had collapsed earlier, leaving “urns open,” says Maria Duarte, lamenting that “they’ve been like that for eight months.” Residents fear that bad weather will return and wash away the remains of this wall, which is already badly damaged.
Bad weather has been wreaking havoc since Thursday. As the harvest gets underway, producers who have already suffered a number of losses are concerned about worsening weather forecasts for this weekend.
