The Greek government declared a state of emergency in the central port city of Volos on Saturday to deal with the effects of marine pollution caused by tons of dead fish.
“A state of civil protection emergency has been declared in the Volos Municipality (…) in the Thessaly region to respond to the emergency needs and to deal with the consequences of the marine pollution that occurred in the Pagastic Gulf,” announced the Secretary – General of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Change, Vassilis Papageorgiou, quoted by the Athens News Agency (ANA).
It is the second environmental disaster to hit the port of Volos, 330 kilometres north of Athens, after flooding hit the Thessaly region last year.
