Isolated villages in Morocco still without help

More than four days after a devastating earthquake struck Morocco’s High Atlas region, many villages have still received no help from authorities, with desperate survivors asking for supplies, shelter and help finding bodies trapped under the rubble.

Some people decided to leave their villages and set up camp along the main road connecting the mountains to the city of Marrakesh in the hope of receiving help. “The villages in the valley are completely forgotten. We need help,” they tell reporters, amid reports of completely destroyed villages and survivors using their hands to dig through rubble to find the bodies of family members. The latest balance is 2901 dead and more than 5 thousand wounded.

Until Tuesday, the Moroccan government had accepted offers of assistance from only four countries, leaving the rest, including Portugal, without a response.

“It’s too late now. Our job is to save people, not dig up bodies,” says a rescue worker from a French NGO.
