The heaviest rains in 100 years cause several floods in Iran

Torrential rains in northern Iran, believed to be the heaviest in a century, have caused several floods, injuring 20 people and causing extensive damage, local media reported on Tuesday.

The rains, which are common in the north of the country, began on Sunday, mainly hitting the city of Astara in Gilan province, located on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

“271 mm of water fell on Astara – such an amount has not been seen for a century,” assured the head of the provincial crisis management department, Amir Moradi, as quoted by the local news agency Isna.

At least one bridge was destroyed in Astara, and rescue teams were mobilized to help affected residents.

According to media reports, in 2022, floods in the country caused the death of at least 96 people in 21 of Iran’s 31 provinces.
