Teachers and non-teachers conclude a week of strikes in schools this Friday with a demonstration in Lisbon, from the President of the Council of Ministers to the Assembly of the Republic.
Called by the All Education Workers’ Union (STOP), the protest scheduled for 2 pm aims to “celebrate the deteriorating conditions in public schools” and affirm the struggle of teachers and non-teaching staff.
The demonstration also marks the end of a week of strikes aimed at restoring working hours and against what the union says are various injustices in the industry.
It was the first strike to impact classrooms in the 2023/2024 school year, with professionals vowing to support last year’s protest until their demands are answered.
The strike caused some confusion throughout the week, leading to periodic closures of some schools, but without the effects of many strikes in the previous school year.
In a statement to Lusa on Monday, Stop coordinator André Pestana acknowledged low school attendance in Lisbon and Porto, where the vast majority of schools were open, because “most people who join are not from the center of large cities.” “.
The teachers continue to seek compensation for six years, six months and 23 days of frozen service, while also challenging a number of other injustices faced by teachers and non-teachers.
The stop also applies to teachers who are subject to the rules of the mobility regime due to illness and working conditions of teachers in a single teaching mode, in the first cycle.
On the other hand, the union highlights the shortage of technical and operational assistants in schools and the precarious working conditions of those who are available.
