Italian police arrested 52 people across the country this Friday as part of an operation against the ‘Ndrangheta organized crime group.
More than 400 Carbines were deployed throughout the country in Operation Karpantos.
According to ANSA, the suspects are accused of crimes such as mafia association, criminal community involved in drug trafficking, extortion, theft and money laundering.
Of those arrested, 38 people were arrested, six were placed under house arrest and eight will be required to report regularly to police.
Italian authorities point to the ‘Ndrangheta as the most powerful organized crime group in Italy because it controls most of the cocaine trafficking that reaches Europe.
The mafia organization’s reach extended beyond its original base in the southern region of Calabria and beyond Italy.
