Voter turnout in Madeira was 39.9% by 4 p.m.

The coalition formed by the PSD and CDS-PP won the regional legislative elections in Madeira this Sunday with 43.13% of the vote. According to information provided by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Interior, the PS was the second party with the most votes with 21.30%.

Juntos Pelo Povo came third with 11.03%, ahead of Chegu with 8.88%. The CDU, the Liberal Initiative, the PAN and the Left Bloc each received one deputy.

Thanks to these results, the SDP/SDS coalition received 23 deputies, missing an absolute majority by just one. The PS received 11 mandates. Abstentions amounted to 46.66%.

Is Albuquerque keeping its promise?

During the election campaign, Miguel Albuquerque promised to resign if the absolute majority lost again. “I do not govern, I will not govern and I refuse to govern unless I have a majority: this is impossible,” he said at a rally in Santa Cruz.

Four years ago, the Social Democrats lost the majority they had held since 1976 for the first time and formed a coalition government with the SDS-PP.

Arrival and debut of the “Liberal Initiative” in parliament

Chega and the Liberal Initiative will make their debut in the Madeira Legislative Assembly in the next legislature, managing to elect four deputies and one deputy respectively.

Chega ran for the first time in the Madeira regional elections in 2019, receiving 619 votes (0.44%) with no mandates. The Liberal Initiative also ran for the first time in elections under the same law, gaining 762 votes (0.54%), also without mandates.

Bloc de Esquerda and PAN return to regional parliament

The left bloc will return to the Madeira parliament after four years of absence, having managed to elect the head of the list and the former leader of the regional structure of the party, Roberto Almado.

The PAN elected social worker Monica Freitas, who made her political debut at the invitation of the party leadership. This is the fourth time the party has participated in the regional legislative elections in Madeira. In the first elections in which he ran, in 2011, he won a mandate, but in the next elections he failed to obtain a mandate.
