Luis Montenegro said the PSD would not “govern the country or Madeira with the support of Chega” in statements made after the results of this Sunday’s regional elections became known.
The Social Democratic President maintained this guarantee, despite refusing to intervene “directly in decisions belonging to the PSD/Madeira”.
Montenegro celebrated the party’s “night of joy” due to the “significant result” obtained, “exceeding that which gave the absolute majority to António Costa.”
“I would like to achieve this result in the next legislative elections,” he said.
The coalition formed by the PSD and SDS-NP won the elections with 43.13% of the votes, but did not receive an absolute majority by one deputy. However, Montenegro says it is “victory with the taste of victory.”
PS, the second party with the most votes, with 21.30% received 11 mandates. Given these data, the president of the Social Democrats emphasized that the party received “more than twice as many votes” as the Socialists.
