Complaint to the European Court of Human Rights could lead to a regional Paris Agreement

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) is hearing on Wednesday a climate complaint against 32 countries that lawyer involved in the case, Gerry Liston, says could lead to a “regional Paris Agreement”.

On the eve of the ECHR’s consideration of the complaint of six young Portuguese men against 32 countries (there were 33, but the complaint against Ukraine was withdrawn after the Russian invasion) for insufficient measures to combat global warming, in a statement to the Lusa agency, the lawyer emphasized that this is the first climate case ever submitted to the ECHR.

If the Court rules in favor of the young people and accepts the case, countries could be forced to speed up their actions to combat global warming, said Jerry Liston, an advocate for the young people through the organization that provides them with legal support, Global Action. Network (GLAN), an international non-profit organization with offices in the UK and Ireland.
