The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) this Saturday raised the warning level issued for the eastern group of the Azores to orange due to the forecast of rain, “sometimes heavy”, for Sunday.
“The passage of a frontal swell with intense activity will cause deterioration of the weather on the islands of the Eastern group, where heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected from the next morning, raising temperatures to orange. Alert level in this group,” IPMA said in a statement.
IPMA has already reported that the islands of the eastern group of the Azores (Sao Miguel and Santa Maria) are under a yellow warning from 12:23 this Saturday until 12:00 Sunday.
The yellow warning remains in effect from 20:30 this Saturday until 00:00 Sunday, but the islands of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria will be under an orange warning from 00:00 to 18:00 Sunday due to “occasionally heavy rainfall that may accompanied by thunderstorms.”
A yellow warning will be in place from 6pm Sunday until 12am Monday, including for “at times heavy” rain, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms.
The orange warning is the second-most severe on the scale and is issued in “moderate to high risk weather situations,” according to the IPMA.
A yellow warning, the least severe on a scale of three, is issued whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.
