This Saturday, authorities confirmed that they are analyzing a tanker truck accident carrying a toxic substance in Illinois, USA, which led to “numerous deaths” and dangerous weather conditions that led to the evacuation of residents.
Jennifer Gabrys, a spokeswoman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said authorities were investigating the incident, which happened near Teutopolis.
Firefighters, police and other emergency crews who responded to the scene Friday night were still on the scene Saturday trying to contain the cloud of anhydrous ammonia pouring from the overturned tanker truck.
“We have many brave firefighters, paramedics, hazardous materials technicians and police officers working the scene,” Effingham County Sheriff Paul Coons said at a news conference.
Authorities did not provide the exact number of dead and injured.
“I’m sorry we’ve had some deaths,” Coons said.
Illinois State Police spokeswoman Melanie Arnold said authorities initially believed five people were killed, but that information was premature.
The crash, which involved multiple vehicles, including a tanker truck, occurred about a half-mile east of Teutopolis on U.S. Highway 40 on Friday around 9:25 p.m., Illinois State Police said in a statement.
