Two earthquakes of magnitude 3.5 and 3.7 occurred on the islands of Faial and Pico.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 3.7 and 3.5 on the Richter scale were felt this Wednesday on the islands of Faial and Pico in the Azores, the Azores Center for Seismic Volcanic Information and Observation (CIVISA) reported.

According to CIVISA, the first earthquake of magnitude 3.5 was recorded at 00:17 local time (1:17 Lisbon time), with the epicenter about 40 kilometers west of Capelo, Faial island.

The earthquake “was felt with maximum intensity III (modified Mercalli scale) in the parish of Angustias (Municipality of Horta).”

The second magnitude 3.7 event, felt on the islands of Faial and Pico, occurred at 1:18 a.m. local time (2:18 a.m. in Lisbon) and had an epicenter approximately 41 kilometers west of Capelo.

“According to the current information, an earthquake with a maximum magnitude of III was felt on the island of Faial (modified Mercalli scale),” CIVISA said.

The source added in a statement that the event “was still felt at intensity II/III in the western zone of Pico Island.”

On the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified by magnitude into micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), weak (4.0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9). ), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9), exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (when higher 10).

The Modified Mercalli Scale measures “degree of intensity and corresponding description.”

At intensity III, considered weak, the shock is felt inside the house and hanging objects sway, feeling “vibrations similar to those caused by the passage of heavy vehicles,” the Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) reports on its web page.
