A fire that broke out early Thursday morning at an Arganil pellet manufacturing plant is expected to continue through Sunday, the Arganil Fire Chief said.
Speaking to Lusa, Arganil Volunteer Fire Department commander Fernando Gonçalves said firefighters were continuing to remove biomass and materials from the warehouse area where the fire was still raging.
“We still have 60% of this material burning,” he added.
Work will continue throughout the day on Friday and is expected to continue for several more days.
“It’ll take all day [desta sexta-feira] and tomorrow for sure. We’ll have work here for a few more days. We hope that by Sunday this situation will be completely resolved,” admitted the person in charge.
The fire alarm at a plant producing “pellets” (small cylinders made of pressed wood) located in Sarcedo, in the municipality of Arganil, Coimbra district, was raised at 5:56 am on Thursday.
According to the website of the National Office of Emergency Situations and Civil Protection, at 10:30 am there were 151 operatives on the scene, supported by 58 vehicles.
