Thousands of people gathered this Saturday to attend the wedding of Infanta D. Maria Francisca de Braganza and lawyer Duarte Sousa Martins in the Basilica of the National Palace of Mafra.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of several European royal families, as well as Carlos Moedas, Pedro Santana Lopez, Pedro Passos Coelho and Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
This is the first royal wedding since the wedding of D. Duarte Pio and D. Isabel de Heredia, which took place 28 years ago. As at that time, the wedding of the daughter of the Dukes of Braganza was also attended by people with portable chairs, hats and flags with the monarchical symbol in their hands.
The bride arrived at the basilica in an 18th-century carriage, accompanied by her father, and walked down the aisle along the red carpet. Cardinal D. Manuel Clemente officiated the ceremony.
As they left, the Infanta and her husband greeted the people, cut the first cake, cut it with a sword, and distributed it to everyone present at the ceremony.
About 1,200 guests visited the Mafra Monastery, where a Glass of Water took place, with a menu focusing on traditional Portuguese cuisine.
