More than 40 firefighters are fighting a forest fire that broke out on Monday evening in the municipality of Calheta in Madeira, the Regional Civil Protection Service said.
A statement from Madeira Civil Protection indicated that the fire broke out at 23:52 in the Caminho do Poço/Pinheiro area and that there were “several active fronts” this afternoon.
“There are 44 operatives in the theater of operations from the volunteer firefighters of Calheta, Madeiran, Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol, the Santa Cruz Sappers, the Funchal Sappers, the Helicopter Brigade, the Forest Police and the Regional Relief Operations Command, supported by air and 15 vehicles.” , the note says.
Civil Protection also reports that five fires have been reported since Wednesday in the municipalities of Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, Camara de Lobos and Calheta.
According to the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, due to the fires, “all movement on classified walking routes in the Rabasala area is prohibited.”
The Regional Roads Authority also announced that it has decided to close to traffic the section of Regional Road 105 between the Ovil section and the Estrada Dr. Roberto Monteiro (Municipal Caminho do Lombo do Salao) in Paul da Serra.
