A building fire in Vigo, Spain, that killed a mother and three young children was fought by 17 firefighters, less than the minimum required by the region’s municipality.
The Vigo City Council has decided that the minimum number of operational personnel must be 20 people plus the head of the service in order to guarantee security in the city, the newspaper reports. Europe Press.
Early this Wednesday morning, all available firefighters at the plant were mobilized to the scene of the fire.
Unions condemned the situation and warned that the number of staff left to deal with another possible incident was “zero” at the time. They say staff shortages have been a “chronic” problem for years and no action has been taken.
Three weeks ago, when another fire broke out in the city, there were 12 firefighters available and other companies had to be called in.
