The National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority recorded 394 incidents related to bad weather between 20:00 and 7:00 on Tuesday, most of which occurred in Greater Lisbon and the Setúbal Peninsula, resulting in no injuries.

Speaking to Lusa, Paulo Santos from the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) said that during this period, 394 incidents were recorded throughout the country, of which 142 were in the municipality of Lisbon and 42 in the Setúbal peninsula.

According to Paulo Santos, the incidents mainly involve falling trees, falling structures, road clearing and flooding.

“We are not aware of any injuries or road cuttings in any of these incidents. Naturally, some roads are temporarily closed during cleanup work,” he said.

At 6:30 a.m., more than 40 incidents were reported on the ANEPC website, most of which occurred in Greater Lisbon and the Setúbal Peninsula due to falling trees, buildings and flooding.

Eight areas of mainland Portugal were orange on Tuesday due to wind and heavy rain, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The continent’s weather on Tuesday will be driven by “successive frontal systems associated with troughs moving in the North Atlantic towards Europe” due to the influence of the Babet Depression.

This Tuesday, “the passage of a cold frontal surface associated with the Babete Trench (named by the UK Met Office) will bring rainfall, sometimes heavy and persistent, and winds from the southern quadrant with strong gusts along the coast and land high.”

“A new episode of worsening weather conditions is expected on the 19th. [quinta-feira]with rainfall, sometimes heavy and persistent, and winds from the southern quadrant, with strong gusts along the coast and in the highlands, for which further weather warnings will be issued,” IPMA adds.
