“Thunderstorm and strong gusts of wind”: orange warning issued for five areas of mainland Portugal today

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a red warning for the Faro region this Sunday due to the risk of “heavy and prolonged rainfall.”

Authorities predict that the most critical period of rain will last until 15:00 this Sunday, given that the area is also under an orange warning due to rough seas (southeast waves of 3-4 meters and south waves of 6-8 meters) , winds (gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour) and the danger of thunderstorms.

A red rainfall warning is issued if rainfall is expected to exceed 40 liters per square meter within one hour or exceed 60 liters per square meter within six hours.

IPMA maintains an orange warning for this Sunday in four other districts (Évora, Portalegre, Beja and Setúbal), where there are “occasional heavy rains that may be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong gusts of wind.”

The IPMA has also issued yellow warnings for Santarem, Lisbon and Castelo Branco due to rainfall.

According to the IPMA, an orange warning is issued whenever a “moderate to high risk weather situation” occurs. A yellow warning applies to “risk situations for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.”
