The President of the Republic will visit Moldova from Monday to Tuesday on an official visit at the invitation of his Moldovan counterpart. This is the first visit of a Portuguese head of state to the country.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will meet on Monday with Maia Sandu, and has also planned meetings with the Prime Minister of Moldova Dorin Recean and the President of Parliament Igor Grosu, according to information conveyed by the President of the Republic.
On the first day of the official visit, the Portuguese head of state will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of Estevan the Great, who ruled the country for more than four decades, from the 15th to the 16th centuries, and was known for his resistance to the Ottoman Empire.
The program of the official visit of the President of the Republic includes a speech at the Moldovan-Portuguese business forum and a lecture for students of the State University of Moldova.
It is also planned to sign a protocol of intent for academic cooperation between the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities and the National Council of Rectors of Moldova, as well as a memorandum of understanding between the Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade of Portugal (AICEP). and the Moldovan analogue.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is the first Portuguese president to visit the country. Cavaco Silva had an audience with the then interim President of Moldova, Minaj Gimper, in February 2010.
The President of the Republic made a state visit to Belgium earlier this month, but the program was changed due to an attack that killed three people, including the suspect.
