João Mendes and Daniel Araujo no longer live in a tent in Carcavelos. After the country learned its history through CMTV, found a house and work in the Algarve. The couple emerged from the gap that left many Portuguese families trapped in the housing crisis. Either there is no affordable housing or there is no money to pay off loans.
It was early in the morning when CM met João Mendes and Daniel again. They were dismantling the tent that had protected them from cold and rain for months in Quinta dos Ingleses in Carcavelos. The sadness that was gnawing at them inside turned into pure happiness soon after their life story was published in a magazine. “KM Investigation”from CMTV: “This happened thanks to the Portuguese people and CMTV that we managed to turn around and kill the nightmare that tormented us. It was as if we were born again after being offered a roof over our heads and a job,” says João Mendes, visibly moved. The life of this couple was transferred to Faro. With a roof over his head, Daniel Araujo outlines his next goal: “The fact that we have no home has taken our children from us, but from now on we will fight to get them back.” The two youngest children remain at the San Francisco de Assis reception center in Carcavelos.
João and Daniel are just two examples of the difficulties thousands of Portuguese face when trying to have a home and a decent life. In many other places, such as the Arroios parish in Lisbon, more and more people are living in tents and pieces of cardboard. “In the last six months alone, the number of tents has increased by more than 70. The situation is very serious and we have been able to identify many cases where people have lost their homes,” says Luis Castro, president of the Arroyos Neighborhood Association. . In the parish, although small, the proliferation of “canvas condominiums” increases the atmosphere of insecurity and unhealthy conditions. “We feel abandoned by the municipality and PSP. There are more and more tents, and they only bring violence and lack of hygiene,” he says CM a resident of the parish who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals.
