The Portuguese Navy rescued 376 people in search and rescue operations at sea from the start of the year to October, according to a report published this Wednesday, which shows 14 people were rescued last month alone.
“Thirty-six search and rescue operations were recorded during October, with 14 people rescued,” the Navy said in a statement, adding that since the beginning of the year, 353 search and rescue operations had been carried out, “of which 376 people were rescued.”
In total, the Navy reported 22 incidents in October in which eight people were rescued in the area corresponding to the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Lisbon.
In the Ponta Delgada MRCC area of responsibility, 12 search and rescue operations were coordinated, with five people rescued, and in the sub-centre of Funchal, one person was rescued in one of the two actions carried out.
The Navy highlights the contribution to the success of the search and rescue system of the National Maritime Administration, the Portuguese Air Force and other resources and facilities belonging to the support structure of the National Search and Rescue System.
“It also highlights the support provided by ships and vessels in search and rescue operations that deviate from their commercial routes to provide the necessary assistance, always coordinated by the National Centers – MRCC Lisboa and MRCC Delgada,” the statement added.
