A fire broke out on a sailboat in the Azores. Seven people saved

Seven people aboard a Marshall Islands-flagged sailboat were rescued this Monday off Pico Island in the Azores. The Portuguese Navy coordinated the operation, which lasted about 19 hours, with the assistance of the Horta port authority.

According to a statement from the Navy, information was received that the vessel, belonging to the pleasure craft “NAMUUN”, had problems with its propulsion system and lack of navigation systems as a result of a fire on board followed by water ingress.

The sailboat attempted to sail to the southern coast of Pico Island to escape the adverse conditions. The Orta rescue station vessel was then entrusted to rescue the crew if necessary.

“The entry of the water was controlled by the crew of the sailboat, and the vessel from the Horta Salva Vida station remained nearby to guarantee the safety of the crew, and awaited the tug from Portos dos Açores, SA,” ILHA DE SÃO LUIS, which towed the sailboat to Horta.” , the Navy said in a statement sent to the editors.

The crew were safely rescued and did not require medical attention.

The operation involved the participation of MRCC Delgada, the Horta Port Authority, the Horta Rescue Service Station, Portos dos Açores and the local command of the Horta Marine Police.
