Seven areas of the continent are under a red warning this Friday, the most serious due to the forecast of heavy seas, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which is forecasting similar warnings from Saturday.
The areas of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga are under a red warning until 15:00 this Friday due to rough seas. Waves of considerable height from 7 to 8 meters are expected from the northwest, which can reach a maximum height of 14/15 meters.
These seven areas will again be under red alert from 6pm Saturday until 12pm Sunday. Waves from the northwest of 7 to 9 meters are expected, reaching a maximum height of 15/16 meters.
The IPMA has also issued a red warning for the areas of Faro, Beja and Setubal from 6:00 to 12:00 on Sunday due to rough seas: waves from the northwest have a height of 7 to 8 meters and reach a maximum height of 14/15 meters .
Also due to the strong disturbances, the IPMA has placed the areas of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga under an orange warning until 18:00 this Friday, and then from 12:00 on Sunday until 3:00 Monday.
The Faro area will be under an orange warning until 00:00 Saturday, then until 6:00 Sunday and again from 12:00 Sunday until 3:00 Monday.
Setúbal will be under an orange warning from 00:00 to 6:00 Sunday and from 12:00 Sunday to 3:00 Monday.
Due to sea conditions, bars are closed in Aveiro, Caminha, Douro, Esposende, Figueira da Foz, Vila Praia de Ancora, Povoa do Varzim, Viana do Castelo, Vila do Conde, Portinho da Ericeira and Sao Martinho do Porto. Navigation in Leixões is restricted at all times, according to information available on the Navy website.
The IPMA has also issued an orange warning, but due to sometimes heavy and prolonged rain, especially in mountainous regions, for the areas of Vila Real, Viana do Castelo and Braga from 3:00 to 9:00 am on Saturday.
