The Partido da Terra movement calls for an electoral coalition to stop radical forces

The Earth Party (MPT) called this Friday for the creation of an electoral coalition for the March legislative elections “to prevent the progress of radical forces.”

The party president considered “the decision to return the voice to the people to be correct,” but emphasized: “due to the impossibility of trusting those proposals and names that are set out in the government party, which led us to the state in which the State found itself, the PDT calls for the creation of a government solution that will unite several parties in the pre-election coalition,” he said in his statement.

Pedro Soares Pimenta recalled that “this solution existed in the past and was called AD, Aliança Democrática, which for the first time had an absolute majority in Portugal in the 80s, but unfortunately ended with the physical disappearance of the leader Francisco Sá Carneiro.”

The same leader recalled that “the last major electoral victory of the right over the forces of the left was successful when this AD worked, namely in the Lisbon city council elections, when the coalition that elected Carlos Moedas knew how to join forces and started years ago, with the historical result of Assunção Cristas for the same municipality.”

Therefore, “the MPT cannot but insist on the historical need to present an aggregation solution,” he said. And so the PDT “expressed its intention to begin negotiations so that a pre-election coalition could be created to avoid the progress of radical forces, which is feared.”

The President of the Republic announced on Thursday that he would dissolve parliament and call early legislative elections for March 10.

The head of state also said that he would postpone the formal procedure for dissolving the government by decree to ensure that the state budget for 2024 can be approved and entered into force.

Prime Minister António Costa asked the President of the Republic to resign on Tuesday, and he accepted the offer.

António Costa became the subject of an investigation by prosecutors in the Supreme Court after suspects in a case linked to a business related to lithium, green hydrogen and the “Sines data center” named him as having interfered with unlocking procedures.

The investigation, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office, may concern crimes related to malfeasance, active and passive corruption of political officials and influence trading.

On the day of his dismissal, Antonio Costa refused to commit “any illegal or reprehensible act” and expressed his full willingness to cooperate with justice.
