Doctors are starting a strike today and inviting the population to join the protests

The National Federation of Doctors (Fnam) is holding strikes and demonstrations today and Wednesday and calling on the population to join protests in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra in defense of the National Health Service.

Concentrations are planned for Tuesday morning at the São João Hospital (Porto), the University Hospital of Coimbra and the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon.

Speaking to Lusa, Fnam President Joana Bordalo e Sa said that negotiations between the Ministry of Health and the unions representing doctors were canceled by the government unilaterally on November 8 and that despite the political crisis, the executive is in power. and the Minister of Health too.

“We continue to see the closure of services due to a shortage of doctors, and those responsible for this shortage of doctors, which has even reached the emergency department, are successive governments in general, but this ministry in particular, led by Dr. Manuel Pizarro,” said the Fnam president .

“19 months ago, Fnam presented solutions to the Ministry of Health to retain doctors in the State Tax Service, which did not happen solely due to the lack of political will of this government, like its predecessors,” he added, saying that the minister “never seriously showed the desire “negotiate” with doctors.

Fnam believes that the government has an obligation to reach an agreement with doctors on “a cross-cutting salary update for all doctors so that they are no longer among the lowest paid doctors in Europe and that they improve their working conditions without loss.” rights that put doctors and patients at risk,” as confirmed in a statement issued on the eve of the strike.

Negotiations between the Ministry of Health and unions began in 2022, but the lack of agreement has intensified class struggle with strikes and claims to justify overtime work beyond the mandatory 150 hours a year, causing confusion and the closure of emergency services. in hospitals across the country.
