A man of about 30 years of age was seriously injured in an explosion that occurred this Monday in the No. 1 Engineer Regiment in Tancos, municipality of Vila Nova da Barquinha.
The alarm came at 14:55.
The soldier suffered injuries to his right arm and neck as a result of being hit by an inert munition fragment generated as a result of welding work as part of preparing a vehicle for explosive device disposal training. His condition is stable and his life is not in danger.
Volunteer firefighters from Vila Nova da Barquinha and VMER personnel from the Abrantes Hospital were at the scene.
The victim was taken by helicopter to the burn unit of Santa Maria Hospital.
In accordance with mandatory procedure, an investigation into the incident was immediately launched.
