At least seven people were killed and 25 injured, some of them seriously, when a bus overturned on a road in southern Egypt on Tuesday, police sources said.
According to police, the accident, the causes of which are still unknown, occurred on a deserted road in Minia province, about 260 kilometers south of Cairo.
“Minya Security Director Mohamed Mustafa was informed of the transport bus incident, which resulted in seven deaths and 25 moderate to serious injuries, most of them bruises and fractures,” police sources said.
The injured were taken by ambulance to Minia hospitals. It is unknown how many people were on the bus or whether it was public transport.
According to the preliminary version, the accident occurred due to fog on the road.
Road accidents in Egypt are common due to inappropriate speeds and poor road conditions, resulting in many injuries and deaths as passengers often do not wear seat belts.
Road accidents killed 7,762 people across the country in 2022, compared with Egypt, according to Egypt’s official statistics agency CAPMAS.
326 deaths in the previous year, an increase of 1.75%.
