On the eve of the end of full duties as a result of the fall of the government, the Minister of Education considered the full restoration of teachers’ seniority to be “fair”. João Costa said that the proposal of Pedro Nuno Santos (the PS leadership candidate supported by the minister) “points to a continuation of the path of returning revenues.”
The Social Democrats even blocked the measure, but Luis Montenegro recently promised to return full service in five years.
José Luis Carneiro, also a candidate for the post of PS general secretary, chose not to take a public position on this issue.
This was the main struggle of teachers during the eight years of socialist rule, but João Costa did not accept it. The minister’s statements provoked a number of criticisms. Paulo Rangel, vice-president of the PSD, accused the governor of a “180 degree flip” for “electoral and opportunistic” reasons.
