Scientists create machine learning method that recognizes galaxies

A scientific team led by the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IA) and a company have created an automatic learning method that has been recognizing “superluminous” galaxies since the early days of the Universe, it was announced this Wednesday.

The method is described in a paper published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, and, according to its authors, “will allow astronomers to be more effective in searching for so-called radio galaxies,” galaxies “with an active nucleus emitting powerful jets.” matter that glows at radio frequencies,” the news agency said.

An international team led by IA developed, in collaboration with artificial intelligence specialist Closer, an algorithm that was trained on images of galaxies in different wavelengths of light.

When tested on other images, the algorithm was “able to predict four times more radio galaxies than traditional methods with explicit instructions,” IA said in a statement, adding that machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, can “help clarify physical phenomena.” this happened “in radio galaxies” when the Universe was ten times younger than its present age.”

One of the paper’s authors, José Afonso, an IA researcher specializing in the study of galaxies, emphasized, as quoted in the same statement, the importance for astronomy of “developing advanced techniques” for processing and analyzing “huge volumes of data.”

“At IA, we are developing and implementing these methods to be able to decipher the origin of galaxies and the supermassive black holes that many of them contain,” he emphasized.
