This Friday, the Brazilian government lifted a ban imposed in July on Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, from using Brazilian user data to train artificial intelligence (AI) models.
In a statement released at the time, the Brazilian government said it had suspended the use of personal data to train generative AI by Meta because it believed such processing would pose an imminent risk of serious and irreparable harm or difficult repair to users.
This Friday, ANPD announced that its board of directors had accepted the appeal sent by Meta and the new commitments made by the company, which must take a number of measures as a way to increase transparency in the use of data.
Under the signed agreement, Brazilian Facebook and Instagram users will receive a notification via email and in the app itself with clear and accessible information about the data processing carried out by the company for the purpose of training its artificial intelligence system.
Additionally, the Brazilian government said Meta will update public communication documents, such as privacy notices and banners on its privacy page, to include more precise information about how it processes personal data to train generative AI models.
Users of Meta platforms will also be informed of their right to object to the processing of personal data for AI training purposes and will be able to exercise this right in a simpler way.
