Four people died after a collision at a pedestrian crossing in 7 days

Four people died in road accidents in just seven days during Operation “Your Mobile Can Wait While Driving.” Between November 28 and December 4, there were 2,937 traffic crashes nationwide, resulting in seven deaths, 38 serious injuries and 814 minor injuries, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Of the seven deaths, four were the result of collisions, all at or near pedestrian crossings in the areas of Viseu, Braga, Aveiro and Setúbal. The fatal victims range in age from 11 to 74, the youngest of whom is a girl who was picked up by a car on Rua Emidio Navarro, near the parish of San Jose, in Viseu, as she was finishing Sunday school and going home. Ana Lobato’s body was buried this Wednesday.

This fatal accident in the city of Viriato once again highlights the increasing number of road accidents. “Since the beginning of the year, we have recorded 41 accidents involving pedestrians, 28 of them occurred at a pedestrian crossing. At the moment, we have recorded seven more accidents involving pedestrians than in all of 2022 and, of course, we are concerned about this increase. We emphasize. it is attention and compliance with traffic rules by pedestrians and drivers,” explained Ines Nunez, commander of the PSP traffic unit in Viseu.
