The Portuguese state paid 4 million euros for Zolgensma’s treatment of Portuguese-Brazilian twins after a Brazilian court rejected a claim by Maite and Lorena Assad’s family, arguing that the price was “unrealistic” and that the family had the financial means. As a result, the family tried treatment in Portugal, turned to the son of the President of the Republic for help, and in 2020 the twins underwent treatment.
