Guterres said the agreement reached at COP28 recognizes for the first time the need to transition away from fossil fuels

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said this Wednesday that the agreement reached at the Dubai Climate Summit (COP28) recognizes “for the first time” the need to transition away from fossil fuels.

Guterres added that the agreement was reached “after many years during which debate on this issue was blocked.”

The COP28 global agreement “clearly” confirms the urgent need to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, which requires sharp cuts in global greenhouse gas emissions, Guterres said after the document was adopted at the summit plenary session.

“Science tells us that it is impossible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees without phasing out all fossil fuels over a period of time consistent with that limit. This fact is recognized by a growing and diverse coalition of countries,” Guterres said.

“My message is that the transition away from fossil fuels is inevitable, whether you like it or not. Let’s hope it doesn’t come too late,” Guterres said, adding that “the world cannot afford delay, indecisiveness or half-measures.”

Countries meeting at the climate summit approved this Wednesday by “consensus” a decision that calls for a “transition” away from fossil fuels, the COP28 president announced in Dubai.

At the opening of the final plenary session, delegates adopted a decision prepared by the United Arab Emirates, which was met with applause.

It is a “historic decision to accelerate action to combat climate change,” said Sultan Al Jaber, president of the UN conference.
