Guyana and Venezuela have reached an agreement not to use force to resolve the dispute over the Essequibo territory and to use dialogue to reduce bilateral tensions.
The announcement was made on Thursday by representatives of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) at a press conference where a statement was read out on the agreements reached by the Venezuelan presidents. Nicholas Maduro and Irfaan Ali from Guyana during a meeting in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The agreement specifies that “Guyana and Venezuela, directly or indirectly, will not threaten each other or use force mutually, under any circumstances, including those arising out of any dispute between both states,” the statement said.
