Mozambican police arrest four people at clandestine water factory

Mozambique police on Friday detained four people at a clandestine purified water plant in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo, in southern Mozambique, a company source told Lusa on Tuesday.

“While [da detenção] they produced and bottled bottles of purified water without the appropriate license and did not comply with hygiene and safety measures,” said Carmina Leite, spokesperson for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Maputo province.

The water plant, called Gota Pura, was operating from an uninhabited house, police said, adding that the four arrested suspects, aged between 23 and 58, were local workers and the owner of the house was at large.

“We are working to identify the owner of the house as we believe he has more information about the factory,” the spokeswoman said, adding that a truck used to distribute water had also been seized.

Police do not yet know how long the water has been circulating in the Mozambique market.

According to the National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (Inae) of Mozambique, the purified water plant did not have a license to operate and, if proven illegal, the facility must be closed.

“If this is a clandestine activity, as they say, it must suspend its activities,” stressed Amino Eusebio, Inae’s inspector.

According to police, the plant was installed based on complaints from the public.
