Three dozen refugees are living at Lisbon airport, awaiting answers to their asylum requests. Of these, 13 are men and spend the night in the International Zone without any conditions.
“The temporary accommodation centers in Lisbon, Porto and Faro are completely filled with male wings,” explains Superintendent Hugo Palma, appointed director of the PSP Integrated Border Management Department.
The law specifies that they can remain in such conditions for up to 4 months. “The people who stayed with us the longest have been there since November. They asked for asylum in the first days of last month, they were refused, they filed an appeal and are waiting for the court’s decision,” explains the person in charge.
Last Sunday was the day with the most orders in a month and a half: 8 in just 24 hours. “We have set ourselves the task of bringing this situation to the attention of all those involved. First, the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, but this was also brought to the attention of the guardianship authorities. Both the Ombudsman’s Office and the General Inspectorate of Internal Administration were already at the airport. “, says Superintendent Hugo Palma.
