As announced today, the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) seized some 6.6 tons of meat last Friday in an operation aimed at secret slaughter in the municipalities of Loures, Mafra and Lisbon.
The operation was carried out by the National Crime Intelligence Unit “following investigative activities in the fight against criminal offenses against public health aimed at the secret slaughter of animals,” ASAE explained in a statement.
As part of the operation, two citizens whose identity and place of residence were to be established were recognized as defendants.
Two house search warrants were also executed, including at a livestock farm, eight out-of-country search warrants, one digital search warrant and three butcher shops were checked, with approximately 6.6 tonnes of food being seized, “essentially , goat carcasses valued at approximately $58,000.” Euro”.
“Following examination, it was determined that the meat was the result of clandestine and/or abnormal slaughter, was damaged and/or spoiled and/or untraceable,” ASAE said.
A sum of €11,470 in cash was also seized, “allegedly resulting from ongoing illegal activities.”
The operation plan also includes the seizure of a 12-gauge shotgun and 37 rounds of the same caliber, as well as a “22-caliber revolver loaded with six rounds of ammunition and 38 rounds of the same caliber.”
ASAE guarantees that “it will continue to develop inspection activities within its competence throughout the country to ensure food safety and consumer health.”
