The city of Celorico de Basto in the district of Braga will now have a municipal police force to maintain public peace and protect the people, according to a decree-law published on Tuesday in the Diário da República (DR).
According to the document, the municipal police of Celorico de Basto will have six officers and will exercise its powers over a municipal territory of 181.07 square kilometers and a population of 17,643 inhabitants.
“The Municipal Police of Celorico de Basto is a corporation dedicated to the performance of administrative and civil police functions, the structure, organization and hierarchy of which are directly dependent on the President of the Municipal Council of Celorico de Basto,” the decree-law states.
The duties of these security forces include monitoring public places or places open to the public, namely areas around schools, guarding municipal buildings and equipment, and regulating and supervising road and pedestrian traffic and vehicle parking.
According to information published on the official website of this municipality, the creation of the Municipal Police of Celorico de Basto was approved by a majority vote at the executive meeting in February this year.
The President of the City Council, José Peixoto Lima, explained on this occasion that the municipality is struggling with a serious problem of lack of human resources in the inspection area, so the municipal police are coming to fill this gap. gap.

“Its creation at this moment is also due to the fact that the municipality has expanded its functions through the transfer of new skills in the fields of health, education and social action, where the municipal police can and should play a corresponding role in monitoring. municipal public buildings and equipment, participate in outreach programs in schools and support vulnerable groups in our population such as the elderly,” the mayor was quoted as saying in the press release.
In addition to these functions, the municipal police will also provide supervision of municipal hunting grounds, security during events and security of municipal parks and gardens, he adds.
