Mozambican police arrested on Thursday a man wanted by Angolan authorities for international drug trafficking since 2019, the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernik) said on Tuesday.
The 51-year-old Angolan man was detained in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, after fleeing his country in September 2019 while “serving a final and non-appealable sentence of more than 10 years in prison in 2017.” for committing the crime of international drug trafficking,” Sernik said in a note sent to the media.
According to Mozambican authorities, the detainee presented several identification documents, including from Mozambique, Brazil, Namibia and the Seychelles, with different names from those in Angola and in others with a different photograph.
The action could also constitute “the crime of forgery,” Cernick warned, noting that the case would follow legal procedures aimed at extraditing the man.
“This is a sign that the Mozambican authorities are attentive to all movements of citizens who intend to use the country as a refuge, as well as citizens who become involved in the world of crime,” concluded Sernik.
