PGR opens investigation into tax benefits attributed to Luis Montenegro’s house in Espinho

The Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into tax benefits attributed to Luis Montenegro’s house in Espinho.

The PSD Law granted an exemption from the IMI to the Social Democratic President. The authorities’ decision was based on an external technical opinion, which classified the property according to Decree-Law No. 53/2014 of 8 April. In 2016, Luis Montenegro presented a project to demolish the site without preserving the façade. The demolition left a hole in which a new house with an area of 829.6 square meters was built.

The tax authorities assigned a value of €574,810 to the house for IMI purposes. Luis Montenegro received a three-year IMI tax exemption. In 2021, 2022 and 2023 you will save a total of 6,700 euros.

The investigation launched by PGR based on an anonymous complaint is being carried out by the DIAP Regional do Porto prosecutor’s office. There are no defendants. Given the anonymous nature of the complaint, the IRT was forced to launch an investigation.

Reaction

In a statement, Luis Montenegro welcomed the start of the investigation this Friday. “This will be an excellent opportunity to finally close this case. Moreover, given this complaint, the prosecutor’s office could not help but start an investigation: and did it on time!”, he believes.

The SDP president said he was not subjected to “any treatment different from any other citizen in the same situation” and did not commit any “ethically or legally unacceptable actions.”

“I am fully interested in the issue at hand, but I will not allow myself to be conditioned civilly and politically.
I will continue to offer the Portuguese the ambitious alternative that Portugal needs,” he stressed.
