A five-vehicle crash this Saturday left two people dead and five injured, including four children, at IP2 in San Matias, Beja area.
The dead are a mother and daughter, aged 77 and 47, who were in the same car.
As for the injured, the most serious is a man in his 30s, while the lungs are four children, all occupants of one of the five cars involved in the accident, Beja fire chief Pedro Barahona told Luza.
The collision, which occurred at the 334th kilometer and the warning of which was given at 19:10, forced the blocking of traffic on IP2.
The five injured were taken by firefighters to the emergency department of the Beja hospital, while the bodies of the dead were taken to the forensic services of the same hospital department, Pedro Barahona added.
The GNR Territorial Command in Beja, contacted by Lusa, said that at around 22:30, due to an accident, the IP2 section between the so-called Air Force roundabout, next to the capital of Baixo Alentejo, and San Matias, was still closed to traffic, opening expected at 00:30 on Sunday.
Firefighters from Beja and Cuba, GNR, the National Institute for Emergency Medical Services (INEM) and concessionaire IP2 were involved in the rescue operations, with a total of 26 operators and 13 vehicles.
A medical ambulance and resuscitation vehicle (VMER) from Beja and an emergency ambulance (IVS) from Mura are among the vehicles mobilized to help the victims.
