ASAE seized about 1.2 tons of food, detained one person and suspended the activities of six establishments, one of which is dedicated to the slaughter of animals in a “disguised and illegal manner”, the watchdog said on Sunday.
In recent days, the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) has carried out a food security operation across the country, seeking to “supervise the trade of foodstuffs most valued at this time of year and ensure compliance with general legal requirements and specific information related to this ” with each sector, as well as identifying possible fraudulent activities,” he said in a statement.
As part of Operation Happy Parties, ASAE inspected approximately 400 economic operators, namely food retailers, markets, confectionery shops, food and beverage establishments and others.
About 1.2 tons of food products were seized, mainly meat products, olive oil, among other things, 14,300 olive oil labels, cutting accessories and other things, all with a total worldwide value of about 12 thousand euros.
ASAE ordered the suspension of the activities of six economic operators “due to the lack of sanitary and hygienic conditions and the lack of technical and functional conditions, including an enterprise where disguised and illegal slaughter of animals was carried out.”
According to the supervisory authority, seven criminal proceedings have been initiated for committing illegal acts related to falsification of food products, price speculation and secret slaughter of livestock, with the detention in the latter situation of a person subject to identification and place of residence. and duly notified for presentation to the judicial authority.
There were also 55 cases of administrative offenses, the main violations of which are ASAE, failure to comply with general and special hygiene requirements, lack of a process or processes based on the principles of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), violations related to food labeling, lack of simple preliminary communication and much more.
In a statement, ASAE assured that it will continue to develop inspection activities within its mandate throughout the country “in favor of healthy and fair competition among economic operators, in ensuring food safety and the public health of consumers.”
