PS, PSD, IL and Chega this Wednesday approved the request to hear in Parliament the Minister of Justice Catarina Sarmento e Castro on the process of granting Portuguese citizenship to two Portuguese-Brazilian twins being treated at the Santa Maria Hospital.
The request presented by Chega was approved by all parties present in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees at the time of the vote.
During the debate on the initiative, Cega deputy Bruno Nunez said that the Assembly of the Republic was the appropriate place for a government official to give explanations on the case, “not through the press.”
Regarding the PS, MP Pedro Delgado Alves stated that “in the case of a matter that falls within the oversight powers of Parliament, a member of the government reports to the committee and it is even useful that clarifications are provided.” if doubts remain on this matter,” the socialists will not object to the approval of the application.
Social Democratic MP Ofelia Ramos believed that “everything that has to do with clarifying the truth of the facts makes sense.”
Since the Assembly of the Republic will be dissolved on January 15, less than two weeks from now, the commission’s president, Social Democrat Fernando Negran, remarked: “We will do everything possible to hold the hearings on one of these days.”
The case of two twins living in Brazil, who acquired Portuguese citizenship and received the drug Zolgensma in Portugal in 2020 with a total value of four million euros, was published by TVI in November and is being investigated by the prosecutor’s office. Management – General Inspectorate of the Republic (IGR) and General Inspectorate of Medical Activities (IGAS).
An internal audit of Santa Maria Hospital concluded that the state Department of Health’s initial hospital appointment was the only exception to compliance in this case.
